Digital Intimate Publics and Social Media

This book explores emergent intimate practices in social media cultures. It examines new digital intimacies as they are constituted, lived, and commodified via social media platforms. The study of social media practices has come to offer unique insights into questions about what happens to power dynamics when intimate practices are made public, about intimacy as public and political, and as defined by cultural politics and pedagogies, institutions, technologies, and geographies. This book forges new pathways in the scholarship of digital cultures by fusing queer and feminist accounts of intimate publics with critical scholarship on digital identities and everyday social media practices. The collection brings together a diverse range of carefully selected, cutting-edge case studies and groundbreaking theoretical work on topics such as selfies, oversharing, hook-up apps, sexting, Gamergate, death and grief online, and transnational family life. The book is divided into three parts: 'Shaping Intimacy', 'Public Bodies', and 'Negotiating Intimacy'. Overarching themes include identity politics, memory, platform economics, work and labour, and everyday media practices.

Chinese New Media Cultures in Transition: Weibo and the Carnivalesque is an important contribution to international scholarship on Chinese social media and its role in empowering ordinary Chinese netizens to challenge and influence government and mainstream media policies and practices in ways not possible prior to the widespread availability of digital media. This book develops a new model for understanding Chinese netizens' model of participation in online discussions-Carnivalesque Participatory Discourse-that integrates Bakhtin's concept of Carnivalesque discourse with concepts drawn from the Chinese cultural context, Weiguan and Meizhi . The model is then applied to case studies of three different major social media events in China, illustrating the usefulness of the model and illuminating scholarly understanding of the features and social-political significance of Chinese online discourse. Chinese New Media Cultures in Transition demonstrates that participating in online discourse and communities in China that are not explicitly political but are playful and humorous can lead to citizen empowerment.

This book investigates media's influences on the acculturation of North Korean refugee young adults in South Korea, especially focusing on identifying the role of online social media. The study analyzed the acculturation and media patterns of the refugee young adults and revealed that online social media and mass media served distinctive functions in the acculturation processes of the refugee young adults. Mass media allowed the refugees to learn a given culture from secondary experiences by providing cultural information in one-way communication. One the other hand, online social media provided a social channel to the refugees where they were able to learn and grow within the host and ethnic cultures from the real interactions with South Koreans and other refugees. These findings indicate that the acculturation process of North Korean refugee young adults is significantly influenced by the dynamic interactions between South Korean media and North Korea-related media and also between the mass media and online social media.
