A Macat Analysis of David Riesman´s The Lonely ...

American lawyer-turned-sociologist David Riesman published his first book, The Lonely Crowd, in 1950. Aimed at academics, it nonetheless gained a large popular audience. In it, Riesman explores the links between social character - the ways in which members of a society are similar to one another - and social structures. He argues that as the United States became predominantly consumer-driven, rather than production-driven - particularly after World War II - American social character changed. Riesman said that prewar Americans had been largely inner-directed: they based their behavior on their own internal values and beliefs. Postwar Americans were becoming other-directed, with external groups, including peers and the media, now a key influence on the way they behaved. Riesman was observing, rather than judging, this change. The public, however, read his book as a criticism of the United States´ newly developing social character. Riesman´s work popularized sociology, helping to establish it as an academic discipline, and today it provides a fascinating window into the 1950s American psyche. 1. Language: English. Hearts of Darkness: Why Kids Are Becoming Mass ...

From Sandy Hook, Connecticut, to Aurora, Colorado, to Tucson, Arizona, this nation has been racked from coast to coast with mass shootings perpetrated by criminals with sick minds. Authors Dr. Liebert and Dr. Birnes believe the increase in violence is an epidemic and dig deep into the causes of mental illness to determine what exactly is going on with these individuals and society as a whole, and what action can be taken to slow this frightening trend toward mass violence. Dr. Liebert and Dr. Birnes believe that many mass suicides are predictable and preventable. Dr. Liebert uses his extensive experience in psychopathology and criminal psychology to describe how clinicians can identify the behaviors of potential suicidal mass killers and possibly prevent their crimes if they read the warning signs when legal opportunities present themselves, such as when recurrent domestic violence or psychotic communications are reported to authorities. The authors also discuss the influence of media - particularly violent video games - and how the evolution of American culture affects suicidal mental illness. With startling statistics, fascinating case studies, and practical, no-nonsense solutions, the authors present a groundbreaking and compelling treatise on violence in America. 1. Language: English. Selfie: How We Became So Self-Obsessed and What...

We live in the age of the individual. We are supposed to be slim, prosperous, happy, extroverted and popular. This is our culture´s image of the perfect self. We see this person everywhere: in advertising, in the press, all over social media. We´re told that to be this person, you just have to follow your dreams, that our potential is limitless, that we are the source of our own success. But this model of the perfect self can be extremely dangerous. People are suffering under the torture of this impossible fantasy. Unprecedented social pressure is leading to increases in depression and suicide. Where does this ideal come from? Why is it so powerful? Is there any way to break its spell? To answer these questions, Selfie takes us from the shores of Ancient Greece, through the Christian Middle Ages, to the self-esteem evangelists of 1980s California, the rise of narcissism and the selfie generation, and right up to the era of hyperindividualistic neoliberalism in which we live now. It tells the extraordinary story of the person we all know so intimately - our self. Exclusive to the audiobook, Selfie includes a unique 15-minute interview with the author, Will Storr, and reader, Jack Hawkins. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jack Hawkins. An Open Letter to All Regarding Donald Sterling...

Simply put, An Open Letter to All Regarding Donald Sterling is a 112 page must-read, thought-provoking audiobook, and one that should inspire a great deal of debate! Author Bryant T. Jordan examines and breaks down, not only the exact words of Donald Sterling as recorded by V. Stiviano in the infamous TMZ and Deadspin recordings, but those of NBA celebrities such as Shaquille O´Neal, Magic Johnson, and Isiah Thomas. Jordan also examines the mass public´s reaction to such thought-to-be-private words and even explores NBA Commissioner Adam Silver´s public condemnation of Mr. Sterling´s words and the subsequent punishment handed down to Sterling, and whether or not such a punishment truly fit the crime. From quoting Martin Luther King to Tupac Shakur (aka PAC) to Jesus Christ of Nazareth, Bryant T. Jordan raises important questions such as: Did the TMZ and Deadspin recordings really prove Sterling was a Hitler-esque racist or merely that he was an upset Sugar Daddy? Did the media leave out important information that would have painted Sterling in a different light, in favor or creating ratings nirvana? Did Sterling deserve a lifetime ban for uttering private words? Are politically incorrect words worthy of a far worse punishment than actual criminal actions like assault, rape, and even murder? 1.
