If Andy Warhol could have anticipated the Internet, he would have said it’s where everyone will be stalked for at least 15 minutes. Notorious underground author Jim Goad describes himself as ´´a lowly neutrino in the vast universe of celebrity,” yet he attracts a certain breed of demented fan that treats him as if he’s the second coming of Christ - that is, until they feel he’s somehow snubbed them, at which point he transforms into Satan. The Headache Factory documents Jim’s extensive experiences fending off fans who morphed into stalkers. By turns terrifying and amusing, the book demonstrates how social media enables the antisocial to reach out and touch anyone they want - even if their target doesn’t want to be touched. 1. Whatever happened to journalism? When did the American news media go from the respected, trusted purveyor of truth to anything but? How did we go from the ´´Glory Days of Television News” to today’s growing distrust and derision of ´´the media”? Is the Internet our only journalistic hope? Can we remake the media into a meaningful part of the check-and-balances system fundamental to the democratic principles on which this country was founded? 1. Language: English. Propaganda has become an inescapable part of modern American society. On a daily basis, news outlets, politicians, and the entertainment industry - with motives both dubious and well-intentioned - launch propagandistic appeals. In Propaganda and American Democracy, eight writers explore various aspects of modern propaganda and its impact. Contributors include leading scholars in the field of propaganda studies: Anthony Pratkanis tackles the thorny issue of the inherent morality of propaganda; J. Michael Sproule explores the extent to which propaganda permeates the US news media; and Randal Marlin details the methods used to identify, research, and reform the use of propaganda in the public sphere. Other chapters incorporate a strong historical component. Mordecai Lee deftly analyzes the role of wartime propaganda, while Dan Kuehl provides an astute commentary on former and current practices, and Garth S. Jowett investigates how Hollywood has been used as a vehicle for propaganda. In a more personal vein, Asra Q. Nomani recounts her journalistic role in the highly calculated and tragic example of the ultimate act of anti-American propaganda perpetrated by al-Qaeda and carried out against her former colleague, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. Propaganda and American Democracy offers an in-depth examination and demonstration of the pervasiveness of propaganda, providing citizens with the knowledge needed to mediate its effect on their lives. You may have seen my article that list arguments that provide reasoning to be against same-sex marriage. This writing is a brief article that provides thriee arguments that those who support - same-sex marriage will most likely use to persuade to be more neutral or even join them in a same-sex marriage movement. I remain neutral on the political issue, but these three arguments are the most frequently used and pack the most punch behind them in their persuasion power. Please note: This is key takeaways and analysis of the book and not the original book. American Girls, by journalist Nancy Jo Sales, is the result of a two-and-a-half-year investigation into how social media is shaping the development of girls in America today and, by extension, what this means for fostering self-esteem and self-respect. Sales interviewed more than 200 subjects, girls ranging from 13 to 19 years old, querying them on the new social norms that have been set by the explosion of social media over the last five years and how this plays out in their daily lives. Sales traveled to 10 states across the country and spoke to girls from diverse racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. She discovered that the effects of social media on girls of all strata are startlingly similar: The steady stream of online interactions has drastically changed the way girls conduct and, more importantly, conceive of and value themselves, often to damaging effects. Learn about Culture Jamming with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. It is increasingly in the media, but what exactly is culture jamming and how does it work? Culture jamming is a form of protest in which advertisements and other media messages are re-arranged or parodied in humorous or disturbing ways. The term covers a range of practices, including sabotaging billboards, spoofing well-known ads, and hoaxing the mainstream media. The purpose of culture jamming is to expose the reality behind corporate spin and to reclaim the media and public spaces from the influence of powerful corporations. Just as radio ´´jammers” interrupt broadcasts with their own messages, culture jammers disrupt the everyday flow of the mainstream media by proposing alternative meanings. The term culture jamming was first coined in the mid-1980s by members of Negativland: an experimental band from San Francisco. The media constantly bombard us with news of health hazards lurking in our everyday lives. But many of these hazards turn out to have been greatly overblown. According to author and epidemiologist Geoffrey C. Kabat, this hyping of low-level environmental hazards leads to needless anxiety and confusion on the part of the public as to which exposures have important effects on health and which are likely to have minimal or no effect. Kabat approaches health scares as ´´social facts´´ and shows that a variety of factors can contribute to the inflating of a hazard. These include skewed reporting by the media, but also, surprisingly, the actions of researchers who may emphasize certain findings while ignoring others, regulatory and health agencies eager to show their responsiveness to the health concerns of the public, politicians, and advocates with a stake in a particular outcome. By means of four case studies, Kabat demonstrates how a powerful confluence of interests can lead to overstating or distorting the scientific evidence. He considers the health risks of pollutants such as DDT as a cause of breast cancer, electromagnetic fields from power lines, radon within residences, and secondhand tobacco smoke. Tracing the trajectory of each of these hazards from its initial emergence up to the present, Kabat shows how publication of more rigorous studies and critical assessments ultimately helped put the hazard in perspective. 1.
